MARTINSBURG —Â Early Saturday, April 22, 2023, the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office investigated a fatal all-terrain vehicle crash that occurred on the Swernicki Road in the town of Martinsburg.
Gene Clark, 55, Rome, NY, was operating his 2022 CF Mato 800 four wheeler traveling north on the Swernicki Road when the ATV exited the roadway and collided with a utility pole, deputies sad.
Mr. Clark was ejected from the ATV and sustained an unknown leg injury, deputies said.
His wife, Kim Clark, 48, Rome, NY, was a passenger on the ATV and was transported from the scene with significant injuries. She succumbed to her injuries after being transported to the Lewis County General Hospital, deputies said.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing. It is not believed that alcohol or speed were a factor.
The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the Martinsburg Fire Department, Lewis County Search and Rescue, Lewis County Parks and Recreation Patrols, and Turcks Towing.
